Demolition of the roof parapets began yesterday and finished today. The parapets have to be demolished because the new floor will be set almost right onto the existing roof (but not quite). We originally thought the new third floor would be set on the parapets, but that would have pushed the roof of the new fourth floor too tall for Dept. of Buildings approval.
While up on the roof, the engineers got a peek at the top of the (green) beam that runs the length of the loft, which explains the wood chips I found on the couch last night.
Meanwhile down in the garage, more concrete was drying around the bases of the two support columns. As mentioned before, the rear column will hold more weight than the front column so it was essentially lengthened with a narrow block of concrete as well as surrounded by a thick well of concrete. The remaining space will be filled in with dirt. A new third column will be added at the back of the building, to help hold the new weight. Rebar was installed to form the footing for that column.
Lastly, they began digging out a pit for the new elevator shaft.
